Get Ready For THE MUPPETS...AGAIN!

The Muppets and I go way back.  I have many a fond memory of the various Muppet movies as well as the singular experience that was The Muppet Show.  Muppet Babies was a constant presence in my younger days and it's a shame the series is not (and likely never will be) available on disc due to a slew of copyright issues.  Hell, my wife bought me a Muppet of my very own for Christmas a few years back and I immediately put it use in the short film I was writing.  His name is Fitzy!

It always seemed a travesty that the characters were allowed to fade to irrelevance at the turn of the century, so you can imagine my excitement when Jason Segal and Nicholas Stoller rescued my old felt friends from the pop culture dust bin back in 2011.  Watching that movie was an emotional experience.  I never cry at movies, but every time it gets to that scene right after Kermit sings "Pictures In My Head" where Segal says, "It's time to light the lights," and Kermit plunks out the last few notes of The Muppet Show theme on that old piano....Niagra Falls, Frankie Angel.

That said, the movie did suffer from a few weird story issues.  Chris Cooper's character never really gels, partially because of a cut scene that explains why he's incapable of real laughter.  (The scene appears in the full version of his rap song on the movie's soundtrack.)  Also, the ending is seriously odd and abrupt.  Rumors persist of an original finale that saw The Muppets come up one dollar short of their fundraising goal, only to have cranky old balcony patrons Waldorf and Statler throw down the last dollar, declaring the show to be "not half bad."  If true, I'm curious why it was changed, as that feels like a much more organic and satisfying ending.

Anyway, this is all by way of saying that Kermit and friends will be returning to theaters next year, with Jason Segal and Amy Adams being replaced by Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, along with Ray Liotta and Modern Family's Ty Burrell.  The official title is currently The Muppets...Again! although I wouldn't be surprised if that title doesn't make it to the finish line.  (The last movie was originally and hubristically called The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made.  Yeah.)

Along with the above and below official stills, we also have an official synopsis, which tells of the Muppets enjoying their rediscovered popularity by going on a world tour.  However:

"Mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais."

I actually dig that description.  It reminds me of The Great Muppet Caper, but with Gervais in the Charles Grodin role.  Plus the idea of a crime/heist movie certainly lends itself to a little more structure than the shaggy dog, getting-the-band-back-together plot of their last outing.

Most importantly?  We'll once again be treated to original music by Oscar-winning Flight Of The Conchords singer Brett McKenzie.  Huzzah!

Ben Folds Five Fraggle Rocks!

Ben Folds Five has come back from the dead, today releasing The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, their first new album of this millennium.  I have tremendous respect for Ben Folds, particularly his work judging NBC's a cappella reality contest show The Sing-Off.  If you had written Folds off as a pop relic of the 90s, pull up an old episode online and just watch the critiques by Folds; guy is smart as hell.  Then again I suppose it's easy to look smart alongside Nick Lachey and a Pussycat Doll.*

Anyway, Ben Folds Five has released the video for their first single, Do It Anyway.  Not only that, but they seem to have taken a cue from Weezer and OK Go, shooting a Muppet-y video with the lovable characters from the soon-to-be 30 year old Fraggle Rock!  As great as it is to see Gobo, Red, Mokey, Wembley, Boober and Uncle Travelling Matt (what, no Doozers?) my favorite part is probably the tag with Folds and his celebrity guests belting out the classic theme along with the actual Fraggles.  My inner nine year old is jealous beyond belief.

*No disrespect to fellow judge and former Boyz II Men member Shawn Stockman, who's not only smart, but also a snappy dresser.  And yeah, they replaced the Pussycat Doll with Sara Bareilles, who at least has some form of personality.

The Muppets Are The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Twilight

I am literally counting down the days till the Muppets return to theaters.  Last night I watched The Great Muppet Caper for the first time since I was probably eight years old, and while there are some fantastically clever bits, (like the running joke that Kermit and Fozzie are identical twins, but only when Fozzie is wearing his reporter hat) the actual movie itself is more than a little bloated and meandering, with one too many romantic duets between Kermit and Miss Piggy.  Muppets Take Manhattan is next up on my long-overdue revisit list.

The complete set of trailers is unimaginably awesome, easily the best marketing campaign of the year.  Other than Jason Segal's upcoming stint as host of SNL, I wouldn't expect to see much in the way of new material between now and when the movie opens, but here's a little something to tide you over.

I'm no fan of the Twilight series and I can speak from a position of experience, having (unfortunately) seen all the movies more than once.  My fiancee is a HUGE fan (which is mostly why I've seen them) and I'll be tagging along to see Breaking Dawn Part 1 this weekend.  (Rest assured I'll be drinking heavily beforehand.)  That being said, I absolutely love these posters.  Rowlf is easily my favorite, but I've always had a soft spot for him.

Muppet Domination happens this Thanksgiving.

TRAILER OF THE DAY! One More Muppet Parody...

Muppet Domination is almost upon us!  With just under a month to go until the Muppets once again take over movie theaters nationwide, we've got one final Muppet parody trailer to stoke that felt-fueled fire...of enthusiasm!  Don't burn the Muppets!  What's wrong with you?

Each one of these parodies has been absolutely top-notch and with this last effort they really go for broke.  Thanksgiving cannot get here soon enough.

TRAILER OF THE DAY! Muppet Mania!

The Muppets are pretty much batting a thousand with all these trailers.  This should be the last one we get before the release, giving us a little more insight into the actual plot of the movie:

It really doesn't get any better than Gonzo's chickens singing "Fuck You", does it?

Now bring on the damn movie!

TRAILER OF THE DAY! The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo

Last night I went to a screening of Moneyball and got treated to an 8 minute sneak peak at Fincher's take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  I haven't read the book or seen the original Danish flick so I'm walking in with absolutely no clue as to the plot, but I love the work that Fincher's doing right now he's assembled a hell of a cast.  The preview really established all the characters and laid out the multi-layered mystery in great detail without giving too much away.  When it was over, I turned to a friend and said "That looks complicated as hell in the most interesting way possible."

I'm therefore more than a little tickled at the latest parody trailer for The Muppets, spoofing that great first Dragon Tattoo trailer.  This thing is packed to the rafters with hilarity, practically hurling the jokes at you fast and furiously.  We also get our first glimpses at some of the film's many, many cameos, so I guess that warrants the most minor of all spoiler warnings.  There's really nothing I don't absolutely love about this.

Muppets Invade OK Go's Music Videography

Obviously the return of the Muppets to movie theaters across the land is reason enough to celebrate, but we've been fortunate enough to get all sorts of sweet side benefits to boot.  Last week NPR was gracious enough to give us a listen to the new Muppets Green Album in its entirety (and we're all better people for it).

Today we've got the rather brilliant music video for what is probably my favorite track on the album: OK Go's cover of The Muppet Show theme song.  And, since this is OK Go we're talking about, they really went to town here, allowing our favorite fuzzy friends to invade some of the band's most famous videos of days past.

Some my my favorite moments include Waldorf and Statler watching cat videos, the Muppets puppeteering the band members, double-cucumber eyes and "Come back Bunny!"  Is it too much to ask for a whole series of other Muppet-infused videos to go along with this album?  If not, we'll have to make do revisiting this little gem from our friends at Weezer...

(Sidenote: If nothing else, we should all be grateful that the HD Era brought about the death of the 4:3 aspect ratio.  YIKES is that jarring.  It's like watching clips from '80s NBA games full of dudes wearing tiny, tiny shorts.)

LISTEN TO THIS: The Muppets Green Album

It's no secret that I harbor some serious love for Jim Henson's creations.  I've seen all the Mupphet movies (Yes, even Muppets From Space) and there are currently three seasons of The Muppet Show sitting on my DVD shelf  that I can't believe I haven't cracked into yet.  My excitement level for this fall's return to theaters could not be any higher, although I wish they had stuck with the original title: The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made.  The spoof teasers all felt like vintage Muppet-style parody and I LOVE that Waldorf and Statler seem to have a major role to play this time out.

So here's a little something to whet your appetite:  One week from today, Disney will release The Green Album, a compilation of great Muppet tunes covered by bands like Weezer, OK Go, My Morning Jacket and The Airborne Toxic Event.  Lucky for us, NPR has the album streaming in its entirety, although you can't navigate from track to track.

I'm about halfway through right now and loving every minute.  Rest assured I'll be listening to this on a loop for the remainder of the day.  My absolute favorite Muppet cover song of all time remains Cake's version of "Mahna Mahna," but The Fray do a fine job here as well.  See the full track list below.
1. OK Go: "Muppet Show Theme"
2. Weezer and Paramore's Hayley Williams: "Rainbow Connection"
3. The Frawy: "Mahna Mahna"
4. Alkaline Trio: "Moving Right Along"
5. My Morning Jacket: "Our World"
6. Amy Lee: "Halfway Down The Stairs"
7. Sondre Lerche: "Mr. Bassman"
8. The Airborne Toxic Event: "Wishing Song"
9. Atreyu's Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte's Billy Martin: "Night Life"
10. Andrew Bird: "Bein' Green"
11. Matt Nathanson: "I Hope That Something Better Comes Along"
12. Rachel Yamagata: "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday"
